  5. Great Recordings Don't Live Forever Unless We Preserve Them

  7. The recording industry has captured some of music's most 
  8. fleeting  moments, recording inspired performances by 
  9. artists like Billie Holiday, John Coltrane and the Beatles for 
  10. generations to come.  Yet, classic recordings can be just as 
  11. ephemeral as the once-in-a-lifetime musical events they 
  12. document.  As researchers rummage through record company
  13. archives only to find priceless master recordings in a state 
  14. of ruin (or missing completely), the need to protect our rich 
  15. heritage of recorded music becomes increasingly apparent.
